The Rays Behind the Fog

“The light of memory burns steady, even when the fog refuses to part.”

October bends the branches
yet truth does not let go,
the fog folds into silence,
where only shadows know.

Time does not move slower,
though memory begs it stay,
eight years slip like water,
yet love always finds its way.

The lake holds back its secrets,
the moon records each tear,
a storm stirs out of silence,
its thunder drawing near.

Still hope becomes a lantern,
still strength is gathered whole,
October writes its chapters
on the canvas of the soul.

Tomorrow, the lanterns will stand against the fog, and the week will close with the what comes next.

How do you navigate within the inner fog?

Do you know without a doubt it lifts and the waiting is never empty, it is where the healing is being done?

  1. This is a beautifully haunting and tender piece. 🌿✨ The imagery of fog, memory, and lanterns captures the delicate balance between loss, reflection, and hope. I love how each stanza carries a quiet intensity—time slipping like water, the lake holding secrets, yet hope and strength persist as lanterns in the darkness.

Your words invite the reader to sit within their own inner fog, to feel it fully, and yet trust in the slow, gentle work of healing. There’s a timeless wisdom here: that even in uncertainty and waiting, growth and restoration are quietly unfolding. Truly evocative and moving. 💛

    • Thank you for your always inspired insightful ness… I think sometimes the fog is there to protect you, you surely do not need to see everything all the time and it forces you to feel within rather than trying to see. It’s a space that teaches me so much… we don’t always have to be navigating or thinking, it’s a pace maker of sorts that I honor when it’s there and when it lifts it shows me more and I’m more ready.

  2. Anticipating a death anniversary is definitely like feeling in a fog. That’s a perfect metaphor, Kerri. May the fog lift and you experience sunshine again – even with the deepening chill. Sending you so much love!

  3. “How do you navigate within the inner fog? This is a very difficult question, Kerri. I’m not sure there’s only one way. Sometimes it’s a matter of just waiting, without making any decisions, trying to stay present, and trusting that, with time, the fog will clear. There are times when a good cry and a deep conversation with someone we trust can help. Praying and journaling, pouring your heart out onto those pages, is often the best we can do. I guess it all depends on how foggy it gets.

  4. It is exactly that to me, I love that explanation… it is a presence in each , the fog and the clarity, not wanting one to leave but inviting each to teach, inspire and show me what I need to see or feel.. feeling in the fog is much easier for me, there are no distractions . Then clarity is so much more appreciated and noticed when I rest in the fog before the clarity comes.
